Executive Summary
This paper describes key issues surrounding WebCGM. Web publishing is gaining increasing momentum as firms seek to modernize advertising, promotions, and e-business strategies to competitive advantage. And, many companies are increasingly using the corporate intranet as the preferred communication conduit for disseminating business-critical information throughout the enterprise. As web publishing continues to evolve, so do the demands associated with accommodating web-publishing applications. Previously missing from the web publishing mix was a data exchange and publishing standard for conveying, high-resolution, scalable and compact vector graphics. Until recently, all web graphics have been raster, thereby subjecting web publications to the inherent limitations of raster images. Fortunately, this restriction was removed when the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) issued the WebCGM Profile as an official Recommendation for structured graphics in publishing on the Web.
